Vessels of Evil

Philosophical exploration of American slavery and the Holocaust. The author analyzes the differences between these defining historical experiences in order to shed light on the ways in which Jews and blacks have gone on to survive. Demonstrating that American slavery and the Holocaust had logically incompatible aims, Thomas denounces the insistence of one group’s “superiority” over the other’s in terms of persecution. He examines the relative flourishing of Jews and languishing of blacks in America, exploring the implications of their dissimiliar tragedies on any future relationship between these two minorities.
