Bend the arc Promotes stosh cotler to CEO
NEW YORK—Bend the Arc: A Jewish Partnership for Justice proudly announces today that Stosh Cotler will take over as the new CEO of the organization next year. Stepping into the role from her current position as Executive Vice President of Bend the Arc, Cotler will bring twenty years of leadership experience as an educator, trainer, and organizer within social and economic justice movements to the position. Bend the Arc’s board of directors voted unanimously to approve the transition earlier this month, and in February 2014 Cotler will replace departing CEO Alan van Capelle, who is leaving to become CEO of The Educational Alliance.
Cotler and van Capelle have deftly guided the growth of Bend the Arc through two years of significant expansion and evolution, putting the organization on the path to becoming the nation’s pre-eminent Jewish advocacy organization on domestic issues. In her years of leadership at Bend the Arc, Cotler has personally overseen some of the organization’s most successful national growth strategies, including strategic mergers and affiliations. Cotler also developed and directed Bend the Arc’s influential Selah Leadership Program, which has trained over 300 leaders, including over 60 executive directors, in practicing transformative leadership for progressive change. As manager of the group’s expansion into online base-building and chapter development, one of the largest such expansions in the Jewish community, she has helped give Bend the Arc an unprecedented ability to harness the potential of America’s progressive Jewish activists. Cotler also serves on the Leadership Team of the Jewish Social Justice Roundtable, whose success in part can be attributed to the impact of the Selah Leadership Program.
“I am incredibly proud of what Bend the Arc’s passionate community of activists have built together, and of how our growth and impact continues to accelerate,” said Stosh Cotler. “American Jews have a critical role to play in the fight for justice, and we have the resources and dedication to strengthen and broaden a progressive domestic agenda that better reflects our Jewish values. I am humbled and thrilled to take on the role of CEO of Bend the Arc, and look forward to continuing to empower America’s progressive Jewish community to make our nation one which honors the dignity of all people.”
“Stosh is a brilliant, vibrant leader and I can’t wait to see what she’s going to accomplish at the helm of Bend the Arc,” said Alan van Capelle. “Having been privileged to work alongside Stosh these past few years, I can say I know of no one as dedicated as she is to achieving social change or as capable of rallying together a community to accomplish it. I’m incredibly proud of what Stosh and I have been able to accomplish together at Bend the Arc these past years, but I know it is nothing compared to what’s to come.”
Over the past year, Bend the Arc has been part of major progressive wins in marriage equality and domestic workers’ rights, while continuing to support the ongoing struggle for immigration reform. Bend the Arc’s efforts to promote social and economic fairness include base-building and community organizing, leadership training and education, and political organization and mobilization. With offices nationwide and a broad, engaged membership, Bend the Arc is the nation’s leading organization of progressive Jewish Americans acting together to help America fulfill its promise.
