Unpacking the Complex Past and Present of Ethiopian Jews

Sigd - An ancient Jewish holiday, has been observed for centuries by the Beta Israel (Jewish Ethiopian) community Fifty days after Yom Kippur, we celebrate the Sigd. Join us to learn more about the holiday with David Mihret, Director of the North American Conference on Ethiopian Jewry (NACOEJ)-Israel.

If ever there was a time for celebrating the depth and riches of Ethiopian culture, and Ethiopian food in particular, the holiday of Sigd is it.

The Epstein School in Atlanta, Georgia is hosting a four-day Sigd celebration, November 1st – 4th, so all its students will have an opportunity to learn and experience the meaning and traditions of Sigd.

We want to invite American Jews to join in song with our Ethiopian siblings in the joy of celebrating the everlasting Jewish connection to Jerusalem. Since 2008, Sigd has been recognized as a national holiday in Israel.

Maddie has just moved to Israel and is excited to celebrate the Ethiopian Jewish holiday of Sigd with her new friend Orly. But what about her own favorite fall holiday, Thanksgiving? Will Maddie be able to celebrate it in her new country? She's determined to find out! Illustrated by Denise Damanti.
