Leaders of Temple Shalom in this Florida town say they fired Rabbi Elimeleeh Scheps last December for, among other things, disrespecting religious traditions. Scheps claims the real reason was that he’s married to a black woman. According to the Orlando Sentinel, Scheps, who came to the U.S. from Israel in 1991 has had bouts of congregation trouble before — in the Bronx, Dunkirk, N.Y. and long Island. In Deltona, he’d been on the payroll for less than six months, but refused to leave the house the synagogue provided, forcing the congregation to file an eviction suit. On July 24, Scheps and his wife agreed to move out.
