The Vibrancy of Moroccan Jewish Youth
The vibrancy of Morocco’s Jewish community is reflected in the fact that over 800 children attend the country’s three day Jewish schools, all of which are subsidized by JDC. In a country where the total Jewish population numbers less than 5,000, it is a remarkable accomplishment that more than 800 children attend Jewish schools. Jews have lived in Morocco for 2000 years and have thrived in this moderate Muslim country. Moroccan Jewish students have the choice of attending three schools: Ozar HaTorah, Lubavitch and Alliance -JDC provides scholarships for those students who cannot afford the tuition. The schools provide high-level secular and Jewish classes, as well as a wide range of extra-curricular activities, including music, dance, sports, and computers. The Jewish schools are central to the Moroccan Jewish community — both in ensuring Jewish knowledge, but also ensuring Jewish continuity and Jewish culture.
