Bay Area program began to build community and wanted a deeper experience so we started convening a Family Camp Shabbaton Retreat at beautiful Walker Creek Ranch in West Marin, an hour north of San Francisco. The annual Shabbaton weekend included Friday night Shabbat dinner, Saturday morning services, and workshops for adults and supervised activities for children, serving as a “taste of camp,” allowing younger children to experience a camp setting in anticipation of attending camp when older. The weekend was an opportunity to celebrate Judaism, learn together, and continue to build the Bay Area Be’chol Lashon community. The program format, which balances guest speakers, parenting workshops, text study, sports, cooking and cultural arts, creates a welcoming environment for both new families and long-time community members. “Camperships” ensure participation for families who might not be able to attend otherwise. Evaluations consistently indicate that participants enjoyed deepening community connections and meeting new friends.
