Heritage and Humor: The Language of Jewish Identity in Mexico City
The Jewish Language Project
October 18, 2026
10am PT/1pm ET
Zoom
What does it mean to be Jewish, Arab, and Mexican? Are those identities in contradiction? Anthropologist Dr. Evelyn Dean-Olmsted has spent more than a decade exploring these questions through her research with Millennial Syrian Jews in Mexico City. Her new book, Coming of Age as Syrian Jewish Mexicans: The Pragmatics of Diaspora, explores this Jewish Latin American community and the role language plays in shaping humor, stigma, stereotypes, and diasporic identity.
Join Dr. Dean-Olmsted in conversation with Sarah Bunin Benor, founder of the Jewish Language Project, as they explore the experiences of Jewish Latin American youth and how the languages they use every day help them navigate identity, tradition, family, and a rapidly changing world. Together, they will reflect on a question familiar to Jews everywhere: How do communities preserve tradition, adapt to changing worlds, and navigate multiple identities across generations, all through the lens of language?
Sponsored by the HUC Jewish Language Project, co-sponsored by Be'chol Lashon, Jewtina and Olamim.
