Celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month with a special Hispanic Heritage Kabbalat Shabbat!

Jewish communities of Colombia, Guatemala, and Mexico will come together online for a service that celebrates and honors their rich cultural traditions. The service will be led by Be’chol Lashon’s Latin America Director, Rabbi Juan Mejía.

National Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

View/download the mini siddur that will be used during the service.

Hispanic, Latino or Sephardic?

The terms Hispanic, Latino and Sephardic are often used as though they are everyday words, sometimes without explanation, sometimes without proper explanation. Singer and educator Sarah Aroeste, who uses these words day to day in her work, explains how she understands them in a Jewish&blog post.

About the Presenter

Rabbi Juan Mejía was born in Bogota, Colombia, and ordained by the Jewish Theological Seminary of America in New York. He lives in Oklahoma City, where he serves as the Jewish Educator for Emanuel Synagogue. Himself a convert to Judaism, Rabbi Mejía is a passionate advocate for converts, and Spanish-speaking Jews.  He  teaches Torah in Spanish through his website.
