Join Riverdale Y and Be’chol Lashon for a special evening of film and conversation marking Sigd, an Ethiopian Jewish holiday. The program will feature selected scenes from Heroes, an upcoming documentary by Ethiopian Israeli filmmaker Avishai Mekonen, currently in its final phase of production. The film explores stories of Ethiopian Jewish identity, community, history, and experience. Following the screening, Be’chol Lashon will moderate a conversation with Mekonen and Haftam Heathwood, two Ethiopian Israeli New Yorkers, who will share personal perspectives and explore the rich history and culture of Ethiopian Jewry, the experiences of Ethiopian Jews in Israel and New York City, and the significance of Sigd as both a cherished tradition and a living expression of Jewish identity. Come learn, listen, and celebrate the diversity of the Jewish experience through the voices and stories of the Ethiopian Jewish community.
